History
Introduction
Caravan clubs from throughout Australia get together for a National Rally every three years, with all states. Tasmania and the Northern Territory do not host National Rallies, but their clubs are able to attend. There have also been caravanners from New Zealand, the USA, Japan and the UK.
The National Rally is usually held over 9 to 10 days. It was always held from 28th December to 6th January, but these dates changed when Queensland hosted the National Rally in September 2013. The dates are now determined by the host state as being the best suited for maximum visitor benefit.
History
In 1970, from an idea born in the late 1960’s, and the first national rally was hosted by one club which was the ‘Caravan Club of SA’. It was held at Mildura in Dec 1971 / Jan 1972. There were six clubs in attendance. The second National Rally (1974/75) was hosted by Caravan Club of Australia at Dubbo.
Two decisions, made at the inaugural National Rally, were that future rallies should be held every three years, with each State/Territory taking a turn in hosting: and that fees should be set and paid in advance, to obviate the need for payment of fees on arrival and during the rally.
From this humble beginning, the attendance at National Rallies has steadily grown, together with organised entertainment and various activities, competitions and sporting events.
At the seventh National Rally, held at Nuriootpa in 1989/90, a decision was made to form an Australian Association of Caravan Clubs. This was approved, together with a constitution, at the eighth National Rally at Maitland (1992/930 with the name being ‘The National Association of Caravan Clubs’.
The Secretariat of the National Association comprised of President, Secretary and Treasurer, plus two delegates, all appointed by the State/Territory relinquishing the organisation of the National Rally. The Secretariat so appointed held office until the conclusion of the following National Rally.
At each National Rally, the National Association (Secretariat) held a Triennial Meeting.
Who Can Attend a National Rally
You must be a member of a registered Caravan Club to attend a National Rally.
Some attend without their caravans, due to health or other reasons, hiring a caravan at the rally destination.
What Arrangements are Made for Members to Attend
Normally, at the end of a National Rally, the State/Territory that is to host the next National Rally will provide a presentation for that next rally.
Extra information, which was then provided by the National Rally committee, was channelled through to members via their State Associations and clubs.
Next National Rally
The 19th National Rally will be held in Mudgee, NSW and hosted by the NSW Association of Caravan Clubs, from 29th September to 7th October 2025 (9 nights)
Previous National Rallies
The 18th National Rally was held in Barmera, South Australia and hosted by the Association of Caravan Clubs South Australia from 27th March to 4th April 2023 (9 nights).
